In October 2012, de Appel arts centre and The Fair Gallery (gb agency, Paris; Hollybush Gardens, London; Jan Mot, Brussels; Raster, Warsaw) launched a new professional development programme, the Gallerist Programme. De Appel arts centre and the Fair Gallery now recruit participants for the second edition of the GP running September 2013–June 2014.

The Gallerist Programme is the first practical training program for art professionals in the commercial segment of the art world, challenging participants to hone their knowledge and skills. The Gallerist Programme approaches the art market through a unique ‘learning by doing’ principle. Lessons and readings of histories of the art market are linked to case studies, practical workshops and informal meetings with a variety of professionals and collectors, and are rolled into a final assignment in the real playing field of LISTE Art Fair Basel.

The curriculum of the Gallerist Programme takes into account the critical balance between the artistic/curatorial and business goals that the gallery owner faces in today’s global market. The tensions between artistic, curatorial and business perspectives are key for the discussions, but the administrative and practical aspects of the profession that are the backbone of a gallery’s operations are also be taken into account.

Who can apply?: The program highlights new developments and shifts within the art world and art market. It is therefore specific in giving attention to and recruiting participants from the geographical contexts of the emerging markets, and beyond. The curriculum accommodates young gallery employees or young gallery owners who have only just started running their business, and allow them to build upon what they might have already learned and or experienced. On the other hand, the program is also open to art professionals who are not in the commercial sector of this industry yet, but want to gain insight and focus before commencing their own business.
