Ernst Hilger, 1950-2025

With profound sadness, the Federation of European Art Galleries Association announces the passing of its long-standing chairman, esteemed colleague, and dear friend Ernst Hilger, who died on Monday, May 26, 2025, in Vienna at the age of 75. As the founder of FEAGA  and Die Galerien (the Association of Austrian Galleries), he leaves behind a lasting legacy.

His passing marks a profound loss for both the Austrian and international art communities. Ernst Hilger was a visionary force, an unrelenting connector, and a passionate advocate for contemporary art. For decades, he was a central figure in Vienna’s cultural landscape and earned widespread recognition for his commitment and insight.

As the founding president of FEAGA and the longest-serving chairman of the Association of Austrian Galleries (Die Galerien), he played a pivotal role in defining galleries as vital mediators between artists, collectors, museums, and public institutions.

Ernst Hilger’s longstanding commitment to the arts and his support for artists, colleagues, and institutions left a meaningful impact. His work shaped many important developments within the gallery world, both in Austria and beyond. He will be remembered with gratitude and respect by all who worked alongside him.
